Dee's Mouskrat

I give credit to Nick Jones for the inspiration of this fly . It was designed after a pattern he tied using stripped squirrel. The stripped squirrel limited too much the size of fly that could be tied. I wanted a material that would have long enough fibers to make a large fly and would have the characteristics of floating. Rabbit and other fibers just did not fit the bill. The inspiration for using Muskrat came to me in the middle of a nice deep sleep. I happened to have a Muskrat skin in by bulk supplies so I cut the needed strips and Dee's Mouskrat was born. I have fished it twice and have had tremendous luck taking large Cutthroat on a local lake. It is fished with a floating line later in the afternoon and evening. Strip it quickly through the water in order to create a good disturbance on the water surface. It's realistic appearance in the water is incredible. Also great for use on stream/river fishing to entice those 'lunkers' out of their holes. Muskrat strips are available in Tying materials/Natural fur section of the catalog.

List of Materials:

1. Hook = Size 1-2/0, 4X long

2. Tail = Gray Ultra Chenille/Vernille

3. Body = Muskrat Strip - 1/8" wide

4. Back = Black Evazote foam

Step 1. Tie in the thread near the bend of the hook. Next, tie in the Vernille and cut approximately 2 times the length of the body.
Step 2. Tie in the foam. Be sure to taper the end to a point in order to get the thread started easily. Make tight wraps back to the tail.
Step 3. Tie in the muskrat strip and wrap just as you would chenille on a wooly bugger, making sure you do not wrap over any of the fur. Tie off about 1/16" back from the eye of the hook.
Step 4. Brush out the fur. Make a part in the fur down the middle of the back and comb the fur to each side. Next pull the foam over the back and tie off just behind the eye of the hook. Trim the foam so it forms a "pusher" that extends beyond the eye of the hook. Whip finish under the foam and cut the thread.
