California Leech

This fly is a very reliable pattern, especially on bright sunny days. It is the first fly I will put on when fishing a new lake for the first time. I have caught fish on it at every lake I have used it on. This is a Bill Schiess "Henry's Lake" pattern. Variations include adding either a gold bead or an orange head.

List of Materials:

1. Hook = Size 4-12, 3X or 4X long (ABI 172 or ABI 222

2.Tail = Rusty Brown (cinnamon) maabou with 2 pieces of copper Krystal Flash on each side.

3. Body = ABI California Leech Blend

4. Wing = Four strands of Olive Krystal Flash, two on each side

Step 1. Wrap hook shank and tie in tail.
Step 2. Tie in two strands of Krystal Flash on either side of tail. Cut the same length as the tail.
Step 3. Insert dubbing into a dubbing loop and twist to make a fuzzy dubbing brush.
Step 4. Wind the dubbing up the shank, stroking the fibers toward the back of the fly to avoid wrapping over the loose fibers.
Step 5. Tie in the olive Krystal flash so there are two pieces on each side of the top of the fly. Cut them just past the beginning of the tail. Whip finish and brush out the fibers with a velsro brush.
